Romanian Liberal Head Rebukes Ruling Coalition Over Phony Electoral Promises

Tariceanu highlighted the democrat liberals and social democrats made these promises although they were fully aware of the country’s economic status.

According to Tariceanu, the members of the coalition kept saying, before the general polls end November 2008, that there are enough funds to back a 50% hike in teachers’ wages, and also lied to people saying the liberal government simply did not want to make that happen. Anyway, time has proved the coalition neither said nor did anything in this respect so far, which only shows they all lied in the electoral campaign.

He also spoke about the no-confidence motions against his government submitted in Parliament by the social democrats or democrat liberals, which targeted the granting of 4% of gross domestic product for agriculture, 7% of GDP for education, compensations to pensioners, payable in cash, for non-used railway tickets, the 50% hike in teachers’ wages and the annulment of the pollution tax for used cars.

Moreover, Tariceanu said the current government run by Prime Minister Emil Boc used up all funds, which triggered an increase in budget deficit, adding his government had the decency to admit it cannot back wage hikes on lack of money.
