Romanian Prosecutors Bring Out Incriminating Evidence In Lawmaker Graft Case

Prosecutors sent Pop to court Thursday on charges of influence peddling, forgery, instigation to forgery and money laundering.

"Subsequently, during March-April 2008, defendant Pop Virgil contacted the denouncer and claimed an additional EUR30,000 for further support in easing access to certain contracts. Pop said that SC Tetarom SA, which is more than 90% owned by the Cluj county council, sets up an auction for the execution of electrical wiring works at Nokia plant, adding he would personally see that SC Electrica wins the auction and several works will be sub-contracted by SC Anpero SRL (the company owned by denouncer Petru Chis –e.n.)," according to prosecutors’ file.

Pop allegedly claimed and received EUR30,000 for these services on April 16, 2008.

The representative of the local anticorruption department on Thursday told the judges of the Cluj Court of Appeals, who try the appeal to the Cluj Court’s ruling that rejects Pop’s request to be released, that prosecutors completed Pop’s file and sent him to court, adding the defendant will be tried at the Cluj Court.

Pop’s lawyer, Eugen Iordachescu, told the judges of the Court of Appeals that Pop’s file is sheer abuse, stressing this should not happen before the judges of the Court of Appeals try Pop’s request to be released.
